HOOVER, Alabama — Police say a man accused of breaking into an apartment and sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl inside is being held in the Jefferson County jail.
Hoover police Chief Gregg Rector tells Al.com ) 22-year-old Newton Githiri has been charged in the early Sunday morning attack.
Jail records show Githiri is charged with two counts of sexual abuse, two counts of sodomy and burglary. Jail records say he’s being held on $2.5 million bond and it’s unclear whether he has an attorney.
Gregg says the girl’s parents heard a noise in their apartment around 3:30 a.m. and found an intruder. Rector says the girl’s father fought and restrained Githiri while her mother called police.
Investigators say the man likely entered the apartment through a sliding door on the second floor.
